Rebel Truce, the History of the Clash (2007)
Rebel Truce - The History Of The Clash recounts the history of one of the most influential British punk rock bands of all time. The film offers a glimpse behind the personalities of the band, their highs and lows, endless touring schedules and ultimately their global success. Through candid conversations with Clash front-man Mick Jones, as well as archive interviews with the band, this is the first time that the band’s full history is told. The film features an interview with legendary punk filmmaker Don Letts, who shares his personal archive of unseen Clash footage. For fans of the Clash, it will be incredibly hard to keep two competing emotions at bay --- fist-pumping adrenaline and crushing depression — while watching a documentary about “the only band that mattered.” The film tries valiantly as any film can to capture the bottled lightning, vitriol and passion that the Clash represented. It certainly ignites long-lost (or at least tamped-down) rushes of punk rock’s furious necessity, its youthful outrage and that staggering wonder of watching Mick Jones, Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon tear into “White Riot” or “London Calling.” In those moments you simultaneously want the world to be a better place socially and politically, to tell everybody to piss off, to go out and buy a guitar, to dive off a stage into a mosh pit and, unsurprisingly, to kill Jack Johnson or Coldplay! Rebel Truce holds up the Sex Pistols, the Clash and, to a lesser extent, the Buzzcocks as the trifecta of punk on the other side of the pond. Director: Alan G. Parker.

Punk and Disorderly (1998)
While Punk & Disorderly is a haphazard compilation and hardly the definitive document of punk the sleeve notes would have one believe, it does serve a couple of useful purposes. The first is to emphasise how far punk reached beyond the time (the late 70s) and place (England) of its origins among the live clips here are UK Subs performing in Los Angeles in 1984 and the eternally risible Sham 69 to a bizarrely enthusiastic crowd in Japan as late as 1991. The second, almost certainly unintentional, purpose served by Punk & Disorderly is an overdue de-romanticising of punk, accomplished by the simple expedient of demonstrating how many wholly worthless groups the movement produced. Compiled by Tim Wright.

The mayhem that ensued was a mix of hilarious moments and crazy snafus that resulted in some shows on the tour being cancelled. Over the following four years NOFX set out to make up several shows in Mexico, Peru and Colombia that got derailed on their first attempt. Not surprisingly there were just as many bumps in the road this time around: inner-band meltdowns, shady promoters, tear gas, fires, drugs, an 8.8 earthquake and, of course, riot cops. Once again the cameras were there to capture every inglorious moment and on August 21st, we’ll release Backstage Passport 2!

Joy Division (2007)
Joy Division is a 2007 British documentary film on the British post-punk band Joy Division, directed by Grant Gee. The film assembles TV clips, newsreel, pictures of modern Manchester and Manchester in the late 1970s, and interviews. The interviewees include the three surviving members of the group, Tony Wilson, Peter Saville, Pete Shelley (of Buzzcocks), Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle), Alan Hempsall (of Crispy Ambulance), Paul Morley, Terry Mason, Richard Boon, Anton Corbijn, and Belgian journalist Annik Honoré, with whom Ian Curtis was having an affair. Film critic Philip French: "Someone says in the film that the revolutionary step they made was to progress from the usual punk group's angry statement: 'Fuck you.' Joy Division were the first to say: 'We're fucked.' There is a particularly impressive sequence in which dark, despairing tracks of urban alienation and angst from the 1979 album Unknown Pleasures are accompanied by a speeded-up nocturnal journey around Manchester. It has the hallucinatory sci-fi feeling of Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville." The person being quoted was Tony Wilson.

In the second episode of our series Under the Influence, we examine the late-70s ska revival in the UK, a movement built upon the fusion of punk rock and traditional ska. Led by the Specials, we look at how the cultural climate of the time period in the UK inspired the founding of 2 Tone Records and how that led to the ska movement in the 80s and 90s. Under the Influence looks into some of the most important music scenes of our time, exploring the people, bands, and styles that changed the course of music forever. Narrated by modern day punk legend Tim Armstrong (Rancid, Operation Ivy, Transplants), Noisey delves deep into the worlds of New York Hardcore, British 2Tone Ska, and German Krautrock to find how these scenes were created, and how they continue to shape art, music, and culture today. Join us as we circle the globe to meet to everyone from x to y, to witness life under the influence.
The story of British indie over three musically diverse episodes. Much more than a genre of music, it is a spirit, an attitude and an ethos. In the 1970s, the music industry was controlled by the major record labels, and the notion of releasing a record independently seemed like an impossible dream. At a time when even the Sex Pistols were on a major label, the true act of rebellion was would be to do it yourself. It took an independent release from Buzzcocks in 1976 with the Spiral Scratch EP to begin a change in the game. The initial pressing of 1,000 copies was funded by family and friends and sold out immediately. The notion of independently releasing your own music was compelling, and it became a call to action. Independent record labels began to pop up all over the UK, each one with its own subculture and sound - from Factory in Manchester to Zoo in Liverpool, Postcard in Glasgow and London labels such as Mute, Beggars Banquet and Rough Trade. They were founded by people with no business experience, just a passion for music and a commitment to helping others achieve creative autonomy. These labels were cutting, releasing and distributing the music themselves. Bedsits became offices and basements became studios. This was DIY, and it felt like a countercultural movement set against all that the mainstream had to offer. These labels were pivotal in getting the new sounds to a generation hungry for change. Queues of hopeful bands waited to drop off demo tapes, and the first wave of indie bands emerged from the newly formed labels. It was a fantastically creative, if somewhat hand-to-mouth time, yet bands also had the freedom to make all the decisions about their image and musical direction themselves. Pioneering music from bands such as Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Echo and the Bunnymen, Orange Juice and Aztec Camera is featured in this episode. These new indie sounds offered a defiantly oppositional stance to prevailing trends in popular culture. With new music exploding out of cities everywhere, it was indie label founder Iain McNay, from Cherry Red, who had the idea for an indie chart - its music spoke to a generation of kids who did not identify with the mainstream sounds on the radio."

The Sacred Triangle: Bowie, Iggy, and Lou (2010)
By 1971 David Bowie was branded a one-hit-wonder, Lou Reed was considered washed up following a disastrous debut and Iggy Pop was seen as merely a drug crazed ex-Stooge. But a meeting of minds in that year's closing months was the catalyst for an extraordinary turnaround for these three musical geniuses, resulting in the most dramatic shift of musical style since the dawn of the rock age. This fascinating film investigates the era in which these brilliant personalities worked most closely together. With the story told by those who were there at the time and via rare and classic film footage, plus recently discovered archive, this program reveals a time of incredible creativity and a sublime chain of events that changed music forever. Hype! (1996)
Doug Pray's entertaining and opinionated documentary on the Seattle music scene takes the (admittedly unusual) position that the Grunge Explosion of the mid-1990s was the worst thing to happen to rock music in the Pacific Northwest. Hype! depicts Seattle as a town where a fertile musical community with a distinctive sound and style grew largely because it was ignored by the rest of the world. Once the unexpected success of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden made Seattle the rock capital of the world, drugs took hold, opportunists scrambled for the spotlight, and cheap flannel shirts became "grunge fashion." The movie features revealing (and often hilarious) interviews with members of such groups as Mudhoney, the Mono Men, the Fastbacks, Seven Year Bitch, Tad, Girl Trouble, Gas Huffer, Dead Moon, and the Supersuckers, as well as performance footage of all these bands and informed perspectives from a number of behind-the-scenes figures. It also features a technically shaky but historically priceless clip of Nirvana's first public performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

They're a DIY collective who put on doom gigs in Sheffield but they're constantly up against it, vying for space and attention on behalf of an extreme and polarising form of music. Narrated by actor Paul McGann - who was a part of Bristol's creative scene throughout this period - it traces the history of the scene. From the sound system culture that arrived in the city with the immigrants from the Caribbean, and how that mixed with the existing punk and new wave scene in Bristol, to hip-hop which arrived in Bristol from New York before any other city in Britain was aware of it. It explores how this clash of cultures and musical styles gave the city a musical identity which to that point it lacked, unlike other industrial cities in Britain such as Liverpool and Manchester. Featuring contributions from key influencers of the creative scene including Milo Johnson of The Wild Bunch, Mark Stewart of The Pop Group, DJ and Producer Roni Size, and Neil Davidge - producer of Massive Attack's later work.

Forty feet beneath the Earth's surface, Darryl Hell's interview experiment with Douglas P. took place amongst the rumbles, hisses, and thunks of the belly of a New York City skyscraper...during a harsh January 2005 blizzard. This would be the first time Douglas would take part in this type of interview project. Its flow replicates a meandering day-long conversation that was held between Douglas P. and Darryl Hell at Mindswerve Studio, New York City, in 2004.

Ministry's The Making of Relapse(Webisodes 1 - 10)
Al Jourgensen not only has reactivated Ministry for a new album and tour next summer, but he’s decided to chronicle the recording of the Relapse record with a series of short “webisodes,” the first of which can be watched above. As you can see, it mostly features Uncle Al and his bandmates sitting around a table shooting the shit and/or listening to playback of some very industrial-metal sounding tracks in the studio. In August, Jourgensen announced he was reuniting Ministry to record a new album, expected next spring, and go on a limited tour, due to his recovery from severe health issues. Ministry now features Mike ScacciaTommy VictorTony Campos, Aaron Rossi and John Bechdel. The U.S. leg of the Relapse Tour 2012 features five concerts in just four cities - Denver, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago - with no plans to add additional American destinations to the trek before taking the industrial juggernaut to Europe.

People Who Do Noise (2008)
'People Who Do Noise' is a film about the experimental music of Portland, Oregon. Extensive interviews and intimate performance footage provide an intense portrait of the motivations, emotions, and methods that go into this uncompromising, sometimes brutal musical form. Unwavering in its focus, the film brings to light an art form unfathomable to many, with only the words of the musicians themselves providing any explanation for the pulsating sonic chaos they create. The unflinching cinematic style defies any trend-setting or commercial representation, opting instead for a stark portrayal of a musical underground at its most genuine and vital.

A-Z of Amphetamine Reptile – Dope, Guns & F*cking up Your Videodeck, Vol.1 1990-94 (2003) From the mid 80-s through the mid 90's, Amphetamine Reptile Records defined the term "Underground." For blistering genre-creating sounds, graphics and attitude, AmRep had no equal. Being far too raw for MTV, the label began what was then a first - the cheap self-published Video Compilation. Enlisting the insane "Dr. Sphincter", the "Dope, Guns..." video series documents a seminal movement in music history. Featured bands include Boss Hog, Chokebore, Cosmic Psychos, Cows, The Crows, Feedtime, God Bullies, Guzzard, Halo Of Flies, Hammerhead, Helios Creed, Helmet, Janitor Joe, King Snake Roost, Lubricated Goat, Melvins, Surgery, Tar, Today Is The Day, Unsane, and Vertigo.
