The commune of Chen Yi was founded in 1978 by about 20 women and men in and around London. The objective of the commune was to create a closed subsystem, a kind of sub-society that aimed to limit contact with the outside world, this contact would be reduced to a series of concrete actions. Chen Yi was never interested in the production of records, some of the members refused even to any kind of production. In 1981 one of its members released a tape edition called "Hanging". The title refers to the first three witches who were hung in Chelmsford, where the house of the commune was located. This cassette was sent to several record companies. John Peel after listening to this tape saw a great potential in Chen Yi and got him a recording contract with CBS in the year 1982/83. They were produced about 7 songs for the first LP of Chen Yi, Lp that never saw the light since CBS withdrew the contract due to disagreements with the commune. All this material, along with some recordings made was compiled in a compilation called "The 1978-1983", was edited by the German label "90% Wasser" in 2006, of which only 500 copies were made. The music of Chen Yi could be defined as furious and wild, sound collages that can remember the beginning of SPK, Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey or Severed Heads, forming part of the beginnings of the most primitive industrial and electro-pop music.
